Joseph Machta
Dr. Joseph Machta is a Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London. His practice is uniquely informed by his perspective as a former teenage cancer patient, an experience that equips him with a profound understanding of the patient journey and the mindset of the unwell child. He is an enthusiastic clinician with a commitment to exemplary communication and technical skill. He is married to the long-suffering Danielle, and they have three very funny children aged between 2 and 9. When he isn't scoping kids or in clinic, he can be found writing and singing paediatrics parody songs, poetry, cooking, or watching his beloved Chelsea FC play.
After completing Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition specialist training in London, Joseph undertook a competitive, specialised international Fellowship at Sydney Children’s Hospital in Australia, where he focused on Inflammatory Bowel Disease, aerodigestive medicine, motility, and therapeutic endoscopy. His primary passions are making children laugh in clinic, endoscopy, IBD, and going home on time. He has been heavily involved in IBD and other gastroenterology-focused research, serving as an investigator in multiple clinical trials, while also leading quality improvement projects to enhance patient care, monitoring, and safety standards.
An emerging personality in the field, Dr. Machta serves on the BSPGHAN Endoscopy Working Group (UK), the GESA Eosinophilic Oesophagitis National Guideline Writing Committee (Australia), and previously served on the editorial team of the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood. He is a dedicated educator, holding the position of Conjoint Associate Lecturer at the University of New South Wales, and regularly delivering specialist teaching for the Royal Society of Medicine (UK). He has presented academic work at multiple international conferences, and is published in several high-impact peer-reviewed journals.
